Plan your next tank before you buy a single thing.

The Tank Planner walks you through tank size, archetype, equipment, water chemistry, and stocking — then emits live compatibility verdicts backed by 6,500+ aquatic species and 60,000+ pairwise records. Plus structural weight + floor-load estimates and a personalized setup playbook.

  • Live size / chemistry / pairwise / equipment / bioload / lighting / structural verdicts
  • Substrate-aware — pH/KH/density effects factored in
  • Personalized 7-phase setup guide (hardware → cycling → stocking → maintenance)
  • No login needed to try. Sign in only to save your plan.
Sample verdict
Size OK — Corydoras schwartzi fits comfortably in 200L (min 75L).
Caution — pH overlap with angelfish is narrow. Watch stability.
Structural — 1,247 lb on suspended wood: place across ≥ 3 joists.
Block — Common pleco outgrows most home aquariums.

Every verdict carries the underlying source citation when available.

Choose your system type

Tank archetype shapes the dashboard, target ranges, alert thresholds, and the workflows you'll use day-to-day. You can mix and match archetypes — keep a reef and a quarantine tank under one account.

Freshwater

community · cichlid · goldfish · blackwater · nano · shrimp · species-only · breeding

From cycling a community tank to dialing in a blackwater Apistogramma biotope. Targets calibrated to your stocking and water source.

Saltwater & Reef

mixed · SPS · LPS · soft · FOWLR · frag · nano · automated

Reef chemistry the way reefers think about it: alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, phosphate, and consumption tracking. Coral provenance + frag lineage built in.

Planted

low-tech · high-tech CO₂ · Dutch · Iwagumi · Walstad · shrimp-planted

CO₂ schedules, ferts, KH/GH, PAR readings. Aquascape revisions and progression timeline so a 2-year layout has its own visual history.

Breeding & Propagation

fish breeding · coral propagation · larval · grow-out · egg · fry

Pair logs, spawn events, larval diet, grow-out cohorts, frag racks. Lineage chains across generations or vegetative propagation.

Quarantine & Hospital

observation · medication · copper · isolation · acclimation · biosecurity

Treatment timelines, copper monitoring, freshwater dips, coral dips. Biosecurity workflow so QT intake and DT release are auditable.

Research & Professional

marine biology · public aquaria · aquaculture · telemetry · longitudinal

Specimen-grade records, sensor ingestion (controllers + probes), longitudinal environmental tracking. Multi-tenant with role-scoped access.

What every system gets

Husbandry primitives that work whether you keep one tank or twenty. Per-system dashboards roll up into a multi-system view at the account level.

System profiles

A first-class record per ecosystem. Display volume, sump volume, substrate, lighting, flow profile, established date, maturity stage. Every system you run gets its own page.

Water chemistry catalog

Canonical parameters with cited target ranges per archetype. Unit conversion (ppm ↔ mg/L, °C ↔ °F, dKH ↔ meq/L). No JSON blobs — every reading is queryable, trendable, alert-able.

Organisms & lineage

Individuals, colonies, frags, plants, macroalgae, cleanup-crew lots, breeding pairs. Coral lineage chains. Multi-source species identity assertions with confidence + authority chain.

Equipment ledger

Lights, skimmers, return pumps, wavemakers, controllers, probes, dosers, ATO, RO/DI, reactors, UV. Brand, model, install date, firmware, maintenance interval, encrypted serials.

Aquascape progression

Aquascape journals with before/after snapshots. Coral growth photos. Frag placement maps and revisions. Tank maturity timeline you can scroll back through.

Stability over time

Trends matter more than single readings. Multi-parameter overlays. Anomaly flags when chemistry swings outside your archetype's acceptable band.

Parameter stability over time

A single reading tells you almost nothing. The trend tells you everything. urAquarium emphasizes drift, swing, and consumption — the language reefers and aquaculturists actually use.

Mobile quick-log: tap each parameter, enter the reading, save the whole test in one batch. All readings share a timestamp so you can compare a single test across every parameter you measured.

Below: reef-keeping consensus targets (cited per row in the measurement catalog). Freshwater, brackish, planted, and biotope archetypes carry their own ranges.

Cycling, the right way

Every new system starts in cycling. urAquarium teaches the nitrogen cycle through your own data — ammonia → nitrite → nitrate as your bacterial colonies establish.

The dashboard shows where your system is in the cycle, what to expect next, and when it's safe to add livestock. Reef maturation, live-rock cycling, and fishless cycling each have their own playbook.

  • 1
    Ammonia spike
Source introduces NH₃; the system hasn't built nitrifiers yet.
  • 2
    Nitrite rise
Nitrosomonas establishes; ammonia drops; nitrite climbs (still toxic).
  • 3
    Nitrate accumulation
Nitrobacter establishes; nitrite drops; nitrate accumulates (manageable).
  • 4
    Cycled
NH₃ + NO₂⁻ both at zero, NO₃⁻ steady. Safe to begin stocking.

Disease, treatment, and biosecurity

Quarantine isn't an afterthought — it's a system type. urAquarium treats hospital and QT tanks as first-class, with treatment timelines that don't bleed into your display tank's chemistry log.

QT intake

Acclimation log, freshwater dips, coral dips, observation period.

Treatment log

Medication name, dose, duration, water changes, response notes.

Copper monitoring

Ionic vs chelated, Cu²⁺ readings, treatment window, stripping copper.

DT release

Biosecurity sign-off, completion criteria, transfer event in timeline.

Built for every level

One platform from first cycle to public aquarium. The depth shows up when you ask for it; the basics never get harder than they need to be.

Tier 1 · Hobbyist

First system, first cycle

Cycle education, ammonia/nitrite/nitrate logging, stocking compatibility, target ranges. Cycle-stage indicator on the dashboard.

Tier 2 · Serious keeper

Multi-system stability

Trend graphs, consumption tracking, dosing schedules, equipment maintenance, aquascape revisions, frag/coral lineage. Public-or-private build journal.

Tier 3 · Pro / Research

Telemetry-grade records

Controller + probe ingestion, longitudinal environmental records, specimen-grade provenance, role-scoped multi-user access for facilities.

Gear, frags, and provenance

Buyers care about where livestock came from. Sellers care about honest descriptions and a clean chain of custody. urAquarium gives both.

Used gear from your inventory

Mark equipment "for sale" or "for trade" from any system's gear list. The marketplace listing inherits brand, model, photos, install date, and your purchase notes — no re-typing.

Powered by the urSynergy goods/services marketplace. Stripe Connect required for paid listings.

Frag, coral, plant trading with provenance

Frag a colony, log the lineage, list the new frag. Buyer gets the full provenance chain — colony origin, fragger, vendor, prior assertions. Macroalgae and freshwater plants ride the same track.

Animal placement workflows stay separate. Live-stock trades carry care acknowledgments.

Add as many systems as you keep

Free to start. Public-or-private per system — each archetype gets its own dashboard, ranges, and workflows. Run a reef, a planted tank, and a quarantine rig under one account.
